Del the Funky Homosapien, long rooted in the Oakland underground, entered this period with the ease of a rapper who had already bent hip-hops grammar to his will. His voice still carried that dry, buffeting swing, but here he pushed further into self-built production and shaped loops that felt both hand-tooled and slightly unstable, almost as if he were testing how far a beat could lean before it fell apart. If You Must sets the frame with a low-slung bounce that sharpens around his rapid-fire pivots. Pet Peeves stretches into a longer, more improvisatory drift, with the verses winding like freehand sketches. Offspring, with El-P, pulls darker shapes from the mix and Phoney Phranchise snaps back with taut, gleaming precision. The effect is unruly yet unmistakably Del, moving entirely on instinct.
